midcentury house

Project Type: Interior and Exterior renovation of a 2,200 sf midcentury home

Services: Full Architectural Services

Structural Engineer: Altos Engineering

General Contractor: Metzler Brothers

This home, designed in 1956 by architect William McDevitt in the hills of Marin County, sat unchanged for 60 years. Pristereo worked closely with a new owner who sought to pay homage to the original design of the home while adding contemporary upgrades. A bright color palette and playful details breathe new life into the residence.

New interventions remain period-authentic to both respect and celebrate the building’s architecture. Interior improvements include full kitchen and bathroom remodels with state of the art appliances. Exterior improvements include a new pool deck with outdoor shower, an outdoor living space, and cantilevered deck with sunset views.

A new deck cantilevered off the hillside is oriented towards unencumbered views of the sunset. Built-in lounge seating and glass railings will allow occupants to take in the expansive hilltop surroundings.

A renovated pool deck includes an outdoor shower, block retaining walls, and a built-in bench. Cantilevered pool copings and penny tile will create a contemporary interpretation of midcentury design.

The renovated kitchen and bathrooms add a bright color scheme and curved wall elements to accentuate the structural grid of the building. New updates are meant to feel authentic to the home’s original modern design.
