Project Type: Full Interior and Exterior Renovation

Size: 2,130 sf historic single-family home

Services: Full Architectural Services

Structural Engineer: Altos Engineering

This home was built in the late 1930s on a historic block near the UC Davis campus. The residence remained untouched and neglected for decades. New owners sought to reinvigorate and extend the life of the home by modernizing and refreshing both the interior and exterior.

The existing redwood siding is largely maintained with new paint and enlarged windows in select locations. Shou Sugi Ban vertical wood batten accents are used to connect the home with its surrounding environment. Western red cedar decking and privacy screening complement functionality.

The main living space of the home was opened up with a new vaulted ceiling and removal of partition walls.

New dual skylights are strategically placed to increase interior natural light while minimizing glare and heat gain. Interior maple screens divide space while allowing light to permeate through.
